Sign-postDisability Rights

As a disabled person, you may be entitled to a number of benefits from the government or your local council. For instance you may be entitled to some financial support if you have problems with walking, need help with personal care, are caring for someone else or are unable to work.

Few of your rights depend on what your condition is called. In most cases, your entitlement to a benefit or a service depends on the effect of the disability on your life (Disability Rights Handbook, 38th Edition, p.9).

The benefits system can be complex and tricky to use and finding out what you are entitled to on your own, isn't necessarily an easy process. Benefit checks are free and can be done by any Independent Advice Agency such as the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

If you live in Bristol, WECIL provides a free and impartial benefits advice service
